I’m Esther Thirimu. My friends and family have called me Swinky for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, the youngest of five siblings. While I was in high school I made up my mind to study abroad where I could work and send money home to my family while still pursuing my studies. So when the opportunity to enroll at a Japanese university presented itself, I got on a plane to start a new life in a foreign land. I learned Japanese and immersed myself in the local culture. I was barely 20 when I moved to southern Japan, so in a sense, I came into adulthood while I was there. Though I missed my family, I was excited to be living in a place where I was not only challenged to be my true self, but also rewarded. After graduating I met a tall, sweet, wiry American called Jesse who became my very close friend. We shared a love for art and performance; I focused on music and he focused on video production. Together, we created music, videos and music videos whenever we had a break from our busy expatriate lives. Our love for the arts overflowed and morphed into a love for each other. We made a commitment to ourselves and our dreams, and established a business together. The business grew, and it was time to move to Los Angeles where I could continue to pursue my music while supporting Jesse and the company.
