Storytelling: Harnessing The Power Of The Solo Show With Director Valerie Hager
Director Valerie Hager discusses getting a solo show up on its feet, drug addiction (and recovery), and what it’s like growing up with a father who’s a mime.
Director Valerie Hager brings a new phrase into The Hollywood Fishbowl ecosystem and it’s one we’ve needed for a long time - “Beast Forward”. Whether she’s acting, dancing, directing or sitting on our sofa chatting, that phrase definitely functions as a beacon for Valerie. While there’s a lot to learn from what she’s working on now, including Deer Woman (a solo show written and performed by Megan Rippey), there’s just as much to be learned from the stories of her earlier years as the daughter of a mime as well as the time she spent living the life of an addict. As always, thank you for listening!

Comedy - Kristen Studdard Takes Us To The Magical Church Of Michael
In which Kristen Studard takes over The Hollywood Fishbowl.
You’ve heard Part I of the II-Part conversation with Kristen Studard. Now, it’s time for Part II of the II-Part conversation! We’ve given the reins to Kristen and she makes the most of her time as host of the show by showering praise on Magical Michael II: Extra Extra Large. Always the contrarian, Jesse runs a vibrant campaign for the dominance of Madeline Maxine III: Furious Roads as the most feminist film of all time. Because that’s what men do. When we get to The Fishbowl, we pull questions about solution, memories (courtesy of @phoeborama), love and loss (courtesy of @rrybrator) and friendly regrets. As always, thank you for listening!

You know Kristen Studard from her appearances on Tim Robinson’s Has This Ever Happened To You (fun fact, Kristen’s episode also had Fishbowl Alumn Morgan Eliza Hill in it!) and Modern Family. But, we know her as the brilliant mind behind Ricky Burbank, The King Of the Valley Bros. In this conversation, Swinky and Jesse track the evolution of Kristen’s career from her childhood to landing in LA to finally cracking the shell and finding a life and career here. Also, great news! Comedy - Ryan Barton Joins Us In Blowing Out The Mics
In which we welcome improv comedian, drag racer and filmmaker Ryan Barton to the program.
We wanted him! We got him! Welcome to the show, Ryan Barton! After working together for over a year on UCB Drag Race, we’re thrilled to get to know the man behind the all-star-status queen Bottomless Mimosa. With a year of history and hardly 3 prior conversations between Jesse and Ryan, there’s a lot to get into. The conversation winds from Ryan’s early years finding his way in comedy to a shocking revelation that co-host Jesse never saw coming (hint: not all comedians want to be actors). Swinky’s along for the ride on this one and she brings her own set of enthusiastic questions and concerns to the conversation. As always, thank you for listening!

Faith-Based Film: Paul Long Seeks Direction, Not Perfection
Paul Long, founder and president of Kappa Studios, shares his thoughts on not just post production but also faith-based filmmaking and even faith.
Paul Long is a native Angelino but not a native post guy. His first college experience was for architecture. It wasn’t until a bit later in life that he got into post-production and eventually founded Kappa Studios (you know it, down on the corner on Magnolia). On this episode, Paul shares the genesis of Kappa, from the early days through to today and their current slate of projects, which includes a move into producing faith-based films. After all of that, we dive into the fishbowl and pull until our hearts content.

Faith-Based Film: Dallas Jenkins Knows The Danger Of Exceeding Expectations
Faith-Based Film Director Dallas Jenkins shares his ups, his downs and his all-arounds as a filmmaker with an uncommon openness of what he’s getting right and what he’s gotten wrong.
Dallas Jenkins has learned the hard way what it means to exceed expectations. Sometimes it’s a good thing, sometimes it’s not. And, sometimes it can bring a multi-year project to a screeching halt. Not only does Dallas take us on the deep-dive into that screeching halt, he also talks candidly about how he got the next project off of the ground, a task that was only possible after he picked himself up first. Then we turn to the Fishbowl and the conversation continues forward with the same positive energy but in more bite-sized chunks.
