Little Tokyo: Kayoko Suzuki-Lange Has All The Breathing Room She Needs
With one foot in the past, one in the present and one in the future, Kayoko has a lot of feet. In this episode, we learn about the journey that led her to creating The DTLA Book, a multi-volume collection of interviews, profiles and photographs of the people, places and business that make Downtown LA so vibrant.
It wasn’t a straight shot from Osaka to Los Angeles for Kayoko. In fact, there were many pit-stops around Japan and the US, all of them contributing to her newest project, The DTLA Book. @DTLABook is a real-time, history-as-it’s-happening profile of Downtown Los Angeles, with profiles, interviews, photos and more of local people, places and businesses. With volume 3 coming soon, Kayoko not only talks about the genesis of The DTLA Book but also how it’s growing, changing and evolving. Most relevant to this conversation is the addition of a profile of Bronzeville, a singular slice of Little Tokyo history. When we turn to The Fishbowl, we pull Fantasy Animals and Reasons For Living, topics as different in tone and timbre as possible and yet perfectly congruent with the tone and timbre of this episode. Thanks for listening!

Little Tokyo: Mariko Lochridge Invests Daily And Dollarly
Kicking off our maxi-series on Little Tokyo is community organizer, journalist and all-around-terrific person, Mariko Lochridge.
Mariko Lochridge jumped back and forth between America and Japan quite a bit growing up. These international interests and ambitions eventually led her to a career in journalism, a career that allowed her to maintain her global mindset. Everything changed when she discovered the challenges and rewards of community organization and local level politics. It’s this think locally/act locally approach that led her to the Little Tokyo Service Center in Downtown Los Angeles, which in turn led to this very mini-series. Since Mariko is producer on this series, we decided to reserve the first block in the deepest dive to date on The Hollywood Fishbowl for her. Get ready for 10 episodes on the past, present and future of Little Tokyo as told through the eyes of historians, community organizers, legacy business owners and up-and-coming entrepreneurs.

Storytelling: John Bucher Firmly Believes That We Can Improve Our Narrative
Debate amongst yourselves all you like, John Bucher is confident we can all craft better narratives for ourselves, both on a micro and a macro scale. What thoughts have spawned from this passion? Listen and find out, friend.
Even if they gave PhDs out for passion instead of knowledge, John Bucher would probably still have one. Enthusiasm, curiosity and insight are all on full display in the first episode in our Storytelling miniseries. We start this series heady asking the biggest story question of all time - why do we need stories anyway? Surely it can’t be a coincidence that every society, no matter how remote from the rest of the world has stories any more than it can be coincidence that so many of these stories have overlapping themes, plots and structures. But, we don’t stop there with the ephemeral puzzles.
Burlesque: Lili VonSchtupp Is An Empathetic Encyclopedia
Lili VonSchtupp has a lifetime of knowledge on Burlesque and she is only happy to share it. From how Burlesque evolved over the last century straight through the basics of tassel twirling, Lili reveals herself to be something of an empathetic encyclopedia with a penchant for naughty puns.
Lili is precisely the kind of person you want speaking on the history of Burlesque. That’s not just because she knows it but because she loves it and that love is infectious. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself imagining what your own Burlesque routine would look like before the episode is out, which begs the question - what would your Burlesque routine look like? Ryan Shukis, you’re safe in this episode. Thanos, however, you are on blast.
