Storytelling: David & David Take Over The Hollywood Fishbowl

In which David Diamond and David Weissman take over The Hollywood Fishbowl and don’t give it back... Until they do!

Jesse’s out. David’s in! Also, David’s in! Once Mr. David Weissman and Mr. David Diamond are hosting, they cover the genesis of the Nicolas Cage/Tea Leoni vehicle The Family Man. Once we’re pulling cards from The Fishbowl, we get queries on meditation, sexiness and inspiration. If that isn’t The Hollywood Fishbowl in 3 words, I don’t know what is. As always, thank you for listening!

Storytelling: David & David Deliver Dual Discussion Directly

David Diamond and David Weissman have written a fair number of movies that made it to the screen. Then, they wrote a book called Bulletproof sharing the wisdom they’ve gained from their shared multi-decade career. And, now? They’re on The Hollywood Fishbowl!

David Diamond and David Weissman have racked up quite a rap sheet in LA, including writing Evolution (directed by Ivan Reitman), Old Dogs (starring John Travolta and Robin Williams), The Family Man (starring Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni) and Dream A Little Dream 2 (starring not one but TWO Coreys from The Brat Pack). With a multi-decade career under their belts, they felt it was time to write down the wisdom they’ve gained to share with a broader audience. And that’s how Bulletproof was born. MWP: Pamela Jaye Smith Is A Romantic With A Capital ‘R’

We are all gems in a interconnected matrix of thought and the sooner we understand the complexity and the beauty of that mesh, the sooner we can actualize as a mature species.

If you’ve had questions about the book of darkness, we have good news! Pamela wrote it (for MWP and titled it The Power of The Dark Side). Of course, she is more than an author. We get into philosophy, free will, religion, love and the fringes of life. If those topics seems heavy and heady, you’re in for a treat. Pamela keeps the conversation light and breezy. As always, thank you for listening!

Faith-Based Film: Sonja Piper Dosti Heard The Best Pitch At Age 8

Sonja Piper Dosti found her faith at 8 years old and never turned her back on it, even through a long and successful career in filmmaking. How does that work? Listen and find out!

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E18_00029.JPG

Sonja didn’t grow up a Christian; she discovered her faith at 8 when a stranger introduced her to The Bible. She’s held that faith close through her life, even as she moved through a career in film. We talk about the gap between the quiet austerity of religion and how that squares with a career in the film industry, which isn’t exactly known for its quiet austerity. We also take a swim in The Fishbowl and answer some humdingers from that arena. And, of course, empathy!

Faith-Based Film: Jennifer Dornbush Believes In Hope, Healing & Dissecting Depravity

Kicking off our miniseries on Faith-Based Film, writer Jennifer Dornbush opens the case file on her life, her writing techniques and thoughts on how we can improve movies about The Bible.

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E17_00172.JPG

Jennifer Dornbush grew up in a house with human body parts strewn about, but not in a bad way. Her father worked in forensics. That environment would have an influence on her writing career but not right away. Once it did though, her career took off in new and unexpected ways, including a recent turn as a faith-based film writer. All of that in more detail in this episode and then we get to The Fishbowl. We draw Improv Poetry (nail it!), Childhood Mischief and Anti-Antidisestablishmentarianism.

Storytelling: Kathie Fong Yoneda Has Had Her Feet On Every Rung Of The Ladder

Kathie Fong Yoneda has climbed from typist to executive but didn’t do so in a straight line (because there is no such thing as a straight line when it comes to life). Exactly how does an early interest in journalism and art lead to top-level employment at major studios? We’d answer that but Kathie does so better than we ever could.

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E12_00042.JPG

One of the common themes among our guests is empathy. While this isn’t a competition, Kathie was the first guest to ask about Neo’s wellbeing after he finished fighting Morpheus. So, that’s where the bar is now, future guests. From there, the conversation takes off, touching on community college, art, journalism, affirmative action, and storytelling. Specifically, we focus on how to think about storytelling when addressing executives. How do you best package an idea for studios? How do you rework a project for pitch and for sale? All that and more on this episode of The Hollywood Fishbowl!

Storytelling: Hilliard Guess Has Game, Shares Game

Hilliard Guess can pinpoint the exact moment he became a writer. It was when he started writing. Of course, no story is so simple and few are this well told. As always, thank you for listening.

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E11_00012.JPG

Hilliard Guess knows his way around a microphone. And a podcast. And a writers room. And a screenplay. And a film set. And a stage. So, where do you even start the interview? We start at the relationships he cultivated with the local skinheads (Neo-Nazi and traditional) growing up in the ‘hood, as a gay, black kid in the 80s Mod/Rudeboy/Punk Scene. From there, we wind our way into the writers room with a torrent of gold wisdom on how to navigate that environment. Our belated arrival at the fishbowl gives us solid three-act structure with the pulls Baby Writers, Autobiographies and Death.

Storytelling: Naomi Beaty Also Has A Very Specific Set Of Skills

Stories need structure too, ya know! And, who better to talk structure with than a teacher, writer and podcaster? On a normal day, we’d have to find 3 people to meet all that criteria. But no day is normal when Naomi Beaty is around. Enjoy the wisdom!

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E10_00012.JPG

Naomi shares a name with a couple of heavy-hitters in the entertainment industry, including Naomi, Naomi and Naomi (listen to the full episode for specifics). She also shares her knowledge and wisdom with us as we do a deep-dive into the mechanics of storytelling. As a long-time collaborator with Save The Cat, a podcaster and a teacher, she’s certainly a contender for this type conversation. As a kind person with a passion for supporting others in their endeavors, she’s a shoe-in. To illustrate the reliability of story structure, we compare two nearly identical films - Taken and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. When we get to the Fishbowl... Guest Host with Swinky! Whooo!

Storytelling: John Bucher Firmly Believes That We Can Improve Our Narrative

Debate amongst yourselves all you like, John Bucher is confident we can all craft better narratives for ourselves, both on a micro and a macro scale. What thoughts have spawned from this passion? Listen and find out, friend.

2018_HFB_PD001_S01E09_00038.JPG

Even if they gave PhDs out for passion instead of knowledge, John Bucher would probably still have one. Enthusiasm, curiosity and insight are all on full display in the first episode in our Storytelling miniseries. We start this series heady asking the biggest story question of all time - why do we need stories anyway? Surely it can’t be a coincidence that every society, no matter how remote from the rest of the world has stories any more than it can be coincidence that so many of these stories have overlapping themes, plots and structures. But, we don’t stop there with the ephemeral puzzles.
