Storytelling: Confessions Of A Dangerous Deer With Megan Rippey
Actor/dancer/writer/performer Megan Rippey discusses pole dancing, skinny dipping, tipping etiquette and leporidae reproductive cycles. That’s right. It’s one of the sexy episodes.
We sat down with actor/dancer/writer/performer Megan Rippey as she was in the process of moving her solo show Deer Woman from the showcase stage of The Whitefire Theatre to The Fringe Festival circuit. Having gotten the nuts-n-bolts perspective of directing the show from Valerie Hager, we were thrilled for the chance to find out how the play was written and, of course, which parts were true, which were lensed truth and which were fabricated. The story of the origins of Deer Woman turns out to be one that spans her entire life (up until now at least). Along the way, we get into her work as an exotic dancer, her time as a student earning her MFA and the ingredients that had to come together to make Deer Woman possible. As always, thank you for listening!

Musicians: Pancakes, Music and Light Conversation with Robert Parker Jr. and Jennifer Foster
Musicians Robert Parker Jr and Jennifer Foster discuss finding ones network, contending with imposter syndrome and whether or not Prince was a phony.
The ever-growing network continues to grow! And grow again! If you follow our non-Fishbowl work, you’re already familiar with Robert Parker Jr. and his collaborations with Swinky (at Babylon Cabaret and strolling down the beach). We finally do the deep dive with Robert and midway through the conversation, who should jump on mic but Jennifer Foster. Swinky, Robert and Jennifer chop it up on the music front while Jesse tries to name all of the 7 dwarves. Get out your pen and pad because we’re going to be talking about a lot of musicians that you may not have heard of but will certainly want to check out. As always, thanks for listening!

Magic: Excavating Introversion With Tina Lenert
Magician/Mime Tina Lenert discusses storytelling as a magician, how The Great California Mime Menace affected her career and yoga… but with goats.
Introverts called to a life-long career of public performance, this episode is for you! Magician/Mime (/many other trades and skills) Tina Lenert identifies as a life-long introvert but is also a career performer. As the conversation unfolds, we discover that she’s not a magician in spite of her social traits but more because of it. Tina walks us through her early days as a guitarist, her other early days as a mime and her other other early days as a magician. Oh, and there’s goat yoga. To find out how we get there… well, you’re just going to have to listen to the whole episode. Sidebar - The full title of this episode was going to be Excavating Introversion For Inspiration Before Expiration but it was too long and blah blah blah-y.

Music: Navigating Cultures of Competition With Miss Charity Lockhart
Miss Charity Lockhart discusses family, putting together a tribute show and how compassion can get you the edge in an industry rife with competition.
In the history of The Hollywood Fishbowl, this conversation is easily the most likely to never have happened. Swinky first met Miss Charity Lockhart in Korea at a swing festival where the two were booked as co-headliners. While Charity was tearing up the stage and Swinky was contending with some serious imposter syndrome. To hear the story of what went right, you have to listen to the episode (spoiler: by dint of this episode existing, you can guess that there’s a happy ending). As always, thank you for listening!

Storytelling: Harnessing The Power Of The Solo Show With Director Valerie Hager
Director Valerie Hager discusses getting a solo show up on its feet, drug addiction (and recovery), and what it’s like growing up with a father who’s a mime.
Director Valerie Hager brings a new phrase into The Hollywood Fishbowl ecosystem and it’s one we’ve needed for a long time - “Beast Forward”. Whether she’s acting, dancing, directing or sitting on our sofa chatting, that phrase definitely functions as a beacon for Valerie. While there’s a lot to learn from what she’s working on now, including Deer Woman (a solo show written and performed by Megan Rippey), there’s just as much to be learned from the stories of her earlier years as the daughter of a mime as well as the time she spent living the life of an addict. As always, thank you for listening!

Magic - Simone Turkington Is A Tiki Doll Come To Life
In which Simone digs to the very bottom of The Hollywood Fishbowl!
It’s the final interview of 2019 and we’re going out with a bang. Simone Turkington is a magician and an aesthete and we were thrilled to have both of her on the program. While the main focus of this conversation is magic and how she kicked off her career (and kept it growing), we also get into her overarching aesthetic, how she came into it and how it informs her work as an LA artist. Of course, life is so much more than work and art. It’s also travel, family and 60’s tiki and we touch all of those bases as well. When we turn to The Fishbowl, we do something unprecedented in the history of the show - we empty it. We pull questions on dream collaborators, Starbucks drinks and demotivation before closing out the interview portion of 2019. As always, thanks for listening!

Magic - Hannibal Unpacks The Emotions That Birth The Art
In which Hannibal brushes off the title of raconteur and then proceeds to tell one hypnotic story after another.
This episode weaves a dense web of stories, from Hannibal’s time growing up in North Carolina to finding his footing in LA and at The Magic Castle. It wasn’t a straight line from a kid content to spend time inside his head to the world of parlor performance, with his magic career beginning proper in his mid-twenties. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, including how Hannibal creates his art and what pivotal life moments inform everything he does. When we turn to The Fishbowl, we pull questions about life on mars (@riceperloff), worst mornings and a bonus conspiracy theory just for good measure. As always, thanks for listening!

Magic - Katrina Kroetch Talks Magic, Juggling, Small Business and So Much More
In which we kick off our mini-series on magicians with the one and only Magical Katrina.
Hailing from Portland, Oregon, The Magical Katrina is no mere magician. She’s a business woman, a juggler, a writer and a burlesque performer (and that’s a truncated list). Having worked the magic circuit in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Katrina has a lot of insight into finding work, keeping work and growing your business. This episode is a little longer than the average because Katrina spills all the beans. Whether it’s creative craft, website optimization or networking etiquette, this episode has got you covered! When we turn to The Fishbowl, we pull questions on backup careers, advice to our young-selves (courtesy of @darinmaki) and the very purpose of life itself! As always, thank you for listening!
