Comedy: Chris Grace Takes Over The Hollywood Fishbowl
Grace Chris with our Chris Grace conversation in 2 parts in part 2 of our 2-part conversation with Chris Grace!
Comedian Chris Grace has got magic to do... and also magic to do. The former is in reference to his weekly improv show, Magic To Do (which can be seen at UCB Sunset on Mondays) and the latter is in reference to the fact that he has recently started doing magic as a hobby (which can be seen at his Instagram account @ambitiouschris). If you like what you hear in this episode (and there’s a lot to hear and to like), you can also find Chris on Fresh Off The Boat, Baby Wants Candy and the very well-catered Superstore. When we turn to The Fishbowl, we pull nightmares, worst qualities and even a surprise guest spot by Swinky!

Family: John Koester Is My Father
As long as I’ve been alive, John Koester has always and only been my father. It turns out, he’s lived a whole life of his own and contains a universe of thought based on those experiences.
Growing up, John Koester (my father) seemed like a pretty straight-forward fellah. The more I learned about the world however, the more complicated he became to me. Those complexities would be frustrating if Dad weren’t able to speak with clarity and insight about them. I suppose the guiding question of this episode is that impossible-to-answer chestnut, “what does it feel like to be you?”. John does an expert job navigating an answer. When we finally turn to The Fishbowl, we pull Best Thing (courtesy of Steve Hamilton) and the Scott Oshima classic, Favorite Place To Hide and others. As always, thank you for listening!

Family: Selina Hamilton, née Koester, Is My Little Sister
Selina wasn’t always my little sister. There were almost 3 years when she didn't exist at all in my life. But, now she does and I couldn’t be more thrilled for it.
You’d be hard pressed to find someone in this mini-series who is more of a pastor than Selina. Besides, you’d be wasting your time as she’s pretty darn good at her job (her patience, empathy and a willingness to answer any questions about religion are all on full display here). But, she wasn’t always and only a pastor. There’s some literature, teaching and scuba diving mixed in there before she settled on her adult life. She walks us through all of that (despite Jesse’s best efforts) and then we turn to The Fishbowl. When we do, we pull questions on the second amendment (courtesy of James Choi, S01E32), Ground Work (courtesy of Alan VonDreditor), Bad Friend Stories and Favorite Freeway (courtesy of Scott Oshima, S01E33). As always, thank you for listening!

Family: Emily Koester Is My Big Sister
(Setup) As a child, I always looked up to my older sister Emily. (Punchline) And that’s not just because she was taller than me. When we were kids, she spent a lot of time well and comfortable in her head. While she was doing that, I was with my friends producing fake radio shows on a boom box with a built-in microphone. Here we are today and I’m interviewing my sister on my latest fake radio show and, wouldn’t you know it, neither of us have changed. We both just got more-so. As always, thank you for listening!

Family: Janice Eshleman Is My Mother
Janice Eshleman has always and only been my mother. At least, from my perspective. It turns out she had a whole life before I was born and also is an entire universe of thought independent of me. Go figure.
Mom didn’t have everything figured out when she and Dad jumped in a stepvan and drove across the country hoping to find work and build a family. That trip took them up and down the United States, landing them in Riverside, California. Sometimes no plan is the best plan. Who knows if there’d be a Fishbowl at all had they thought things through clearer. Which leads to the most mind-aching question I know how to ask: Why am I the one inside my body? It really doesn’t make sense in the grand scheme of things. But, as Mom will tell you, “Everything is everything”. And it is. Thank you for listening!

Little Tokyo: Mariko Lochridge Invests Daily And Dollarly
Kicking off our maxi-series on Little Tokyo is community organizer, journalist and all-around-terrific person, Mariko Lochridge.
Mariko Lochridge jumped back and forth between America and Japan quite a bit growing up. These international interests and ambitions eventually led her to a career in journalism, a career that allowed her to maintain her global mindset. Everything changed when she discovered the challenges and rewards of community organization and local level politics. It’s this think locally/act locally approach that led her to the Little Tokyo Service Center in Downtown Los Angeles, which in turn led to this very mini-series. Since Mariko is producer on this series, we decided to reserve the first block in the deepest dive to date on The Hollywood Fishbowl for her. Get ready for 10 episodes on the past, present and future of Little Tokyo as told through the eyes of historians, community organizers, legacy business owners and up-and-coming entrepreneurs.

Potpourri: Kate Faust Is Having An In-Body Experience
We were lucky enough to catch Kate about two and a half decades into her most recent in-body experience. Join us as we discuss art, music, landing in LA, love, being corporeal and comfort foods.
You can relax. Kate Faust is our guest today. In fact, you should relax (because there’s really no reason not to). From her early days in rural Pennsylvania to her arrival in LA, Kate seems to have lived an entire life. So, why does it feel like she’s hardly a quarter of the way done? Perhaps because the scope is so broad, Kate’s innate curiosity feels limitless. She talks about everything from coming into one’s body as a child to reclaiming that body after experiencing trauma, from discovering one’s voice as an artist to finding the means to manifest that voice on a public stage in Los Angeles. And, of course, we turn to The Fishbowl. When we do, we pull Comfort Foods, First Memories and Crying Time.

Potpourri: Jody Clark Knows A Bit About Self Defense
Jody Clark is from Lancaster, which is not a bad place to be from if you enjoy background work. Between shorts and features, background, bit and lead, Jody has seen and done it all on screen and shares those stories with us (and YOU!).
Jody and Jesse have both spent time filming in Lancaster. Jody has been at it a bit longer so he has more good stories than Jesse. But, that’s OK. It’s not a competition. Right? RIGHT? Jody also shares his interest in consumer defense goods with Jesse, who is a stranger to any types of weapons. And, of course, the world-famous Hollywood Fishbowl! WARNING: This episode has the most name drops of any so far. Enjoy picking them up!
