Ashley Lowry has been in the music game for quite some time. She started her journey with The Lowry Sisters, playing guitar and providing backup vocals. Ashley didn’t stop making music after the trio split. In fact, she did just the opposite and produced a full album independently and is on the cusp of releasing it single-by-single as Solar Yellow Human. Always an open book, Mimi shares her wisdom and insight into the independent music scene with us as she tells the story of how she went from watching her mother perform on stage nightly to building her own career in ethereal electronica.

Mimi Page’s story starts on Broadway, but not in the way that you’d think. She began her musical journey as a child traveling with her mother who was a Broadway performer and watching from backstage. It was when she first heard Enya and Tori Amos that Mimi felt like she had found a tone and timbre that spoke to her and a whole new world of sonic possibilities opened up to her. From there, it was just a matter of learning how to make the sounds that were in her head and in her heart. Of course, there’s more to it than that. And, the only way to learn that ‘more’ is to listen!

A proudly humble product of “the worst town in America”, Katie Anne Mitchell is chasing down her place in the world of Storytellers/Singers/Songwriters (a career they don’t usually mention at junior high job fairs). Her album is titled The Many Lives Of Mockingbird and one could be forgiven for thinking it’s autobiographical. Katie herself has gone through a fair number of transformations herself from the early days on the debate team. But, then, why would we tell/sing/write her story here when she does it so marvellously in the interview.

We start this series heady asking the biggest story question of all time - why do we need stories anyway? Surely it can’t be a coincidence that every society, no matter how remote from the rest of the world has stories any more than it can be coincidence that so many of these stories have overlapping themes, plots and structures. Life in Japan can be a bit of a challenge if you discover that your passion lies in dance, parody and nudity as Nikita Bitch Project did. Nikita Bitch Project was working at an ad agency in Tokyo when her life took a pair of very sharp turns. The first was learning about the world of Burlesque which led to dreams of living in New York where she could watch live shows any time she likes. The second was the great earthquake of 2011. These two powerful influencing factors created a perfect storm that would change the trajectory of her life forever.
